Master Mason - Laurie Baker !

Laurie Baker was an award winning British-born Indian architect. He was born and brought up in Britain. His initial interests on India developed when he worked as an architect with World Leprosy Mission, an organisation dedicated to the care of those suffering from Leprosy. Baker initially struggled with his work in India, because there were many hurdles awaiting him here which were never dealt in his study. Termites, the yearly monsoons, walls made of cow dungs made him awestruck and Baker discovered the capabilities and advantages in these kinda constructions.

Trivandrum became the gifted city with Baker spendin most of his life there. He did several constructions in and around the city varying from houses, churches, asylums, slum colonies, etc. Baker's architectural style was of vernacular, organic and sustainable types. Here are some of his constructions and Baker himself at work. After years of extensive architecture and social work, Baker died in April 2007 at the age of 90.
